A FAITHFUL BETRAYAL After having inherited the lands divided in "lots", pruning techniques and the Latin vine planting system, in 1999 Masseria Li Veli underwent a structural revolution giving place, in the ancient restored cellars, to horizontal submerged cap vinification tanks. Today, in the same structures built by de Marco, under impressive stone vaults, Li Veli wines are aged at a constant temperature of 16°. From its 32 hectares of vineyards Li Veli produces 220.000 bottles: all wines which assert their identity through the native vines from which they are produced. Here and in few other places, the passing on of tradition has required people to be innovative or, as someone said, to faithfully betray it: to develop traditional vines reconciling the memory of the land, traditions and people, with modern instruments to achieve quality.
A productive philosophy which we have made our own and which we
carry on with Li Veli, knowing that we are the last inheritors of a
history which began with the Messapi and which is now ours thanks to
the far-sighted project of Antonio de Viti de Marco.
